We love living in the desert most of the time. We get mild winters that allow us to grill out all year around. The winter rarely gets below 80, and the summer heat can be offset with a good air conditioner, outdoor shade structure, and a misting system. While there are so many positives, there is one negative that I will utterly never like. In the summer, our backyard becomes a sanctuary for scorpions. Between the cooling shade from our awning, the unlimited water source from our sprinklers, and the plethora of insects that are attracting to our mulch bins, I had just accepted that scorpions would be part of our summer life. That all changed one Sunday afternoon when we were preparing for our weekly grill. When I opened the door to our grill, I saw a scorpion a few inches below the crank on the propane tank. If it had been on the other side of the tank that wasn’t visible from the front, our little scorpion friend would have most certainly felt threatened and stung me out of defense. From the pictures we took, we believe it was a “Centruroides sculpturatus” commonly called the “Arizona Bark Spider” which is native to Phoenix and is one of the most deadly species according to wikipedia. I spent a lot of time doing research for the best ways to deal with scorpions, and I wanted to share what I found with the readers of our blog. A lot of the articles online simply suggest hiring exterminators which will kill them for a season, but it’s not something we want to do every year. Additionally, we have a pet bunny who likes to scamper in our backyard and eat the fresh grass so we’re concerned about the damage the poison would do to our little furry friend. If you’re in a hurry, our top pick for a scorpion repeller is MaxMoxie Ultrasonic Pest Repeller. It’s a set of electronic audible insect, spider and scorpion repellers. It has been on Amazon for more than three years, and we’ve personally had tremendous success with it.- Patented Ultrasonic Pest Repellent: Our patented system sends ultrasonic waves to disorient and disturb pests like rodents, roaches, spiders, mosquitoes, bed bugs, and ants, driving them away from your home. No more pests nesting or feeding in your living space.
- Safe for Kids and Pets: This ultrasonic pest repellent is inaudible to humans and household pets. It's environmentally friendly with no poisons, traps, or dead pests to clean up. Non-toxic and tasteless, ensuring the safety of your loved ones.
- Long-Lasting and Energy Efficient: Designed to last 3-5 years, this product features a built-in night light with low power consumption. Each package contains two units, providing comprehensive pest protection for your home.
- Easy to Use: Simply plug in the ultrasonic pest repellent, and it will start emitting different frequencies to protect your living room, bedroom, kitchen, garage, and attic from pests. Hassle-free and effective home pest control.
- Effective in 2-3 Weeks: It's normal to see an increase in pest activity initially as they leave their nests. Significant reduction in pest activity should occur within 2-3 weeks, providing you with a pest-free home.
Best Electronic Scorpion Repellant
First, we absolutely 100% recommend this specific electronic repeller. The reason is that people have done tests on the decibels produced, and some of the cheaper models are little more than nightlights. Since the audio produced is higher than humans can process, some manufacturers create low quality product that generate little to no sound output. The cheaper knock-off models can be bought for as low as $0.80 on ali baba, and there are many people selling these on Amazon. We chose the Max Moxie because of its 250+ reviews and how long it had been on the market. So I’m sure your curious how this works, and it hits scorpions on three fronts: 1. Annoying Sound – The ultrasonic sound can be heard by insects and arachnids so this makes your home less appealing to both scorpions and spiders. 2. Lowers Food – The primary food for scorpions and spiders are bugs such as crickets and flies. Their mobility makes it much easier for their prey to find more comfortable homes, which leads to the predators eventually following suit. 3. Disorients Arachnids – The ultrasonic frequency interferes with their senses. This results in them being less effective at nesting and hunting. They will have a harder time just moving around which will make it difficult to catch any food even before the bugs begin their exodus. The other reason we recommend this one is that they have a 100% money back guarantee. If it doesn’t work, then you can return it for a full refund. Many of the other repellers charge a restocking fee which leads me to be a tad suspicious. This one backed it up that if they didn’t get rid of our insects, scorpions and spiders, we’d get a refund. To be compeltely honest, we didn’t send it back (since it worked for us) so I can’t speak to how long it takes to get a refund.- READY TO USE: Mouse & Spider Super Glue Traps are pre-scented and intended for use without additional mouse bait. For best use, leave the mouse trap with paper on so pests can acclimate to the trap, then place mouse traps indoor along known or suspected rodent pathways. The mouse traps are scented to attract insects, ants, mice, rats, roaches, spiders, crickets and other pests and rodents. The peanut butter scent on the glue boards is non-allergenic!
- YEAR-ROUND PROTECTION: Catchmaster glue traps are safe, non-toxic and mess-free. The sticky traps are an effective alternative to standalone glue boards that may not hold up as well in damp or humid areas like basements or bathrooms. Mice and roach traps indoor can last up to one full year in an area with normal conditions.
- HOME & FAMILY SAFE: Designed to help you keep your family protected and safe from unwanted pests in your home, Catchmaster's glue traps are intuitive, secure and effective. Our rodent and insect killer traps are easy to place, simply put the insect trap against walls & along pathways to catch unwanted pests and insects. Our products are tested under the harshest field conditions to ensure maximum reliability for any level of pest control expert.
- TOTAL COVERAGE: Use the rodent and insect traps indoor in residential, commercial, or industrial buildings, and sensitive areas where rodenticides or snap traps are undesirable or prohibited. Our glue boards are proudly made in the USA, fast acting and non-toxic, keeping your family and home safe from pests!
- INTELLIGENT PEST MANAGEMENT: At our core, we are dedicated pest detectives. We believe in utilizing a science-based approach to integrated pest management. We call this approach Intelligent Pest Management. We leave no stones unturned when it comes to pests and we have unwavering conviction in our products.
Glue Board
Scorpions are notorious for having poor vision, and the do most of their hunting at night which makes it even more difficult for them to avoid these traps. The board is 8″ x 5″ and can be placed along the wall under some furniture where people are unlikely to walk. They are subtly scented to attract the scorpions and spiders. Once either steps on the board, the powerful glue will prevent them from being able to move or free themselves. These work especially well in the covered areas like patios or under awnings. If you or a pet gets in contact with the board, you can free yourself with a bit of vegetable oil. In addition to our electronic repelling device, we also have glue traps underneath our picnic table on the patio, and beside our compost bin. Thus far, we haven’t caught any scorpions or spiders on them; however, we have caught enough insects to feel they’re worth keeping up. I wouldn’t want these as our only line of defense, but they can provide additional coverage. Additionally, if you do start seeing a lot of scorpions, spiders or insects on the trap, you know it’s time to either spray more or replace the electronic repelling device.- Demand cs controls more than 30 Common insects including spiders, ants, flies, wasps, fleas, ticks and bed bugs.
- Demand cs is a water-based insecticide concentrate that offers excellent indoor and outdoor pest control.
- Each 8 oz bottle makes 8 - 40 gallons (mixed at 0. 2 to 0. 8 oz/6 to 24 ml per gallon of water).
- The LOT Number printed on the bottle is not an expiration date
Insecticide / Bug Spray
Before we decided on the electronic solution, we discussed insecticide with our friends. For us it wasn’t the right decision as we have a little pet bunny that gets to have play time in our backyard, and treats herself to the fresh grass. A few of our neighbors do use insecticide, and they suggested, Syngenta Demand Cs. This is professional strength pest control product, and a single 8 oz bottle makes 100 gallons of solution. This bug spray is micro-encapsulated which means it is more resistant to the sun so it will last longer. Even with this though, our neighbors recommend spraying every 60 days to in the summer months. The advantage of this option is that it protects against many other insects such as termites, bees, and mosquitoes. We had our home professionally sprayed by an exterminating company, and I took notes where they were spraying and spoke with the exterminator as he was doing the removal. His visit to our home cost $125 and lasted just under an hour for both inside and outside treatment. I don’t claim to be an expert on where the best place to spray for every home. I’d love to get a recommendation of a YouTube video on the topic that I could include for our readers if anyone has seen a quality instructional video on this topic.Steps to eliminate spiders and scorpions
Step 1: Keep your landscaping trimmed. Tall grass and weeds are the dream home for insects, and these are the main food supply for scorpions and spiders. By keeping your lawn trimmed, you’ll naturally have a less desirable habitat. Step 2: Clean your patio/porch regularly We barbecue and eat on our deck frequently in the summer. Occasionally, food will spill from our plate, and this can attract ants and other bugs. You will also want to thoroughly dry your porch after rain so the scorpions don’t find any puddles to moisture. Step 3: Seal your home You can get inexpensive spray foam (link) that will fill any gaps in your home near windows, doors, and especially drains. A hole the diameter of a pencil is large enough to let in some breeds of scorpions, and many types of spiders. Step 4: Scorpions love wood piles and cardboard boxes If you have either of these for a fire pit, then be especially careful when getting anything from the pile. We recommend using some glue traps near the base of the pile as well as spraying insecticide. Step 5: Own a blacklight Every home in Arizona should own a blacklight. Scorpions glove under the UV black light making them very easy to see. If you find one, you can either avoid it, spray it thoroughly from a distance or grab it with tongs to later smash. How do I tension a sail shade?
A properly installed sail shade is very easy to setup. The reputable manufacturers will include turnbuckles that can simply be tightened with a screwdriver.
You simply need to place the screwdriver in the middle of the turnbuckle so that the entire piece rotates. Some of the cheaper brands of sail shades don’t have these and simply attach directly to the hook. If this what you have, we’d suggest buying a turnbuckle for each attachment. You can get a full installation set that includes 4 turnbuckles for less than $14 on Amazon. |
Do I need approval or a builders permit for a sail shade ?
I am not aware of any state that requires a builder permit for a sail shade. However, some city councils and home owners associations do have restrictions. If this is a concern, you can either contact them for any restrictions. |On the few occasions that we’ve heard about this from the readers, the restrictions were around the size. Most sail shades designed for single family homes don’t have any issues. |

Will snakes eat scorpions and spiders?
Yes, snakes will make a meal out of spiders, scorpions and other insects, but I’m not sure that it’s advisable to seek out scorpions for your patios. While most snakes that target the creepy crawlies won’t hurt humans, they may be more likely to bite a beloved pet. Alternatively, small insect eating snakes are a favorite snack for larger snakes that could pose a risk to humans. For this reason, are fans of getting snakes away from your porch and patio. We do not condone hurting the snake, and some of the home grown remedies may be illegal in your area. To help you in case you find a snake around you’re home, we’ve created a complete guide for getting snakes away from your patios.
What kills scorpions instantly?
Terro Scorpion is an aerosol spray that will kill scorpions on contact. It will also keep killing them for 6 weeks if you spray it an area. If you don’t have spray, and need to kill one immediately I have used a bookshelf to smash it.
I put my shoes on and stand at a distance. Place one end of the bookshelf on the ground so that the scorpion is roughly under the middle of the shelf. When you let go of the other end, gravity will pull the shelf down and crush the scorpion.
I then step on the bookshelf to ensure it’s fully killed. You will want to be careful when removing the carcass. Once I’m certain it’s completely dead, I use some long tongs to remove it. I also thoroughly clean off the floor and the bookshelf.

What does it mean when you find a scorpion in your house?
We live in Arizona within eyeline of a state park, and we see several scorpions in our home each year. I’ve been stung by a scorpion once, and I’ve killed the other ones that have made it in our home.
If they stay outside in our lawn or garden, I leave them be. However, when they get in our home I worry about them stinging either my family or our pets.
Why do I keep finding scorpions in my bathroom?
Bathrooms especially near toilets and showers are a fantastic luxury home for scorpions. They can hide in the dark places under the toilet or sink. They also have access to the standing water to drink. Bathrooms are the most common room to find a scorpion.
Do scorpions walk on carpet?
Yes. Scorpions can walk through carpet rather than on it. I have found several scorpions on our carpeted staircase.
Do Scorpions play dead?
Yes. Scorpions can play dead as a defense mechanism. Also, even if the scorpion is actually dead, his stinger could be active and inject you when handling it. We have an old pair of tongs that I keep outside to deal with scorpions and spiders.
I saw this firsthand. We had a scorpion in our garage that was climbing up the wall. I stood about 6 feet away and squirted 5-6 sprays of the scorpion solution on the scorpion. At first, it simply stopped moving and pulled pulled its arms legs close. I watched it for a few seconds and it wasn’t moving.
Since I knew that scorpions play dead I got a 4′ metal pole and pushed it over the scorpion crushing it. If it were dead there wouldn’t be an issue, and if it was injured from the spray, this would be a quick way to stop it from suffering. Upon pressing the pipe into the body of the scorpion it immediately started flailing it claws. It’s tail looked like it was coiled and ready to strike.
This lasted at most a few seconds as I pressed the pipe through the scorpion body.
Can you kill a scorpion by stepping on it?
This is a terrible idea. Even if you’re wearing thick sole shoes, you’re putting your leg near the scorpion. If he darts away or you miss him slightly, he may sting your foot above the shoe. Never, ever try to step on a scorpion barefoot. We now have spray scorpion killer because they are so common in our home, however, before we got that I used a board from a bookshelf to crush it.
